Template:Edit request/List[edit]
Hi! Recently your bot’s edits to Template:Edit request/List are marked as minor. This suppresses notification emails about the edits, which is annoying and is against the goal of making edit requests more visible. Could you please disable the minor edit flag?
Speaking of this page, Category:Commons protected edit requests has five subcategories, of which only two are listed. Could you also list Category:Commons protected edit requests (protection level), Category:Commons protected edit requests (semi protected) and Category:Commons protected edit requests (template protected)—or maybe tell the bot to list all subcategories it finds, to make it more future-proof? Thanks in advance! —Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:28, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
- The edits are still minor, and still only two subcategories are listed. Nothing’s resolved here. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:40, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- That would require a re-write, and i have currently no time for that. Sorry. But it is on my to-do list. Best --Steinsplitter (talk) 17:10, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- I’m sorry to see that you’ve given up on that to-do list, but it’s your decision. Is the source code available somewhere so that others can do the rewrite without doing unnecessary extra work? —Tacsipacsi (talk) 07:36, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi: Sorry for the late reply, https://pastebin.com/ewc9vz4v --Steinsplitter (talk) 13:59, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
- BTW: If you have a toolsforge account, i can give you access to the bot if necessary or you copy the code to your own bot (then i can disable the task). Best --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:01, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the code! However, without an explicit free software license, I’m unfortunately legally not allowed to modify it.
- I have a Toolforge account (with the same name as my wiki account), but I have no bot account, so if you would give me access to your bot, that would be perfect (but a license is still needed so that I can modify the code). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:27, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi: You have been added to https://toolsadmin.wikimedia.org/tools/id/sbot. The source code of the aforementioned file is licensed user en:WTFPL. Best --Steinsplitter (talk) 18:34, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks! I’ve put the code on GitLab and (hope to) have fixed the minor edit issue. I’d like to add the remaining subcategories as well, but that needs a bit more work. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:44, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- P.S. I put only that file on GitLab, but maybe you could publish other bots’ source codes there as well, to enable other people to see them. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:01, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Wiki Science Competition 2023[edit]
Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, Wiki Science Competition 2019 and Wiki Science Competition 2021, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2023 has started in almost all the countries.
If you want to take part in WSC2023, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.
If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.
If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase (such as Russia), please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2024.
Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Patches waiting for a push[edit]
HI, There are at least 2 issues about Video2Commons with patches which are waiting for submitting: [1] and [2]. Could you help please? Thanks, Yann (talk) 12:25, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
SteinsplitterBot tasks should be maintained by WMF[edit]
Hi, I see that functions fulfilled by SteinsplitterBot are regularly not done. As they are essential for correct operation of Commons, I think they should be taken over the WMF. I will fill up a feature request. What do you think? Yann (talk) 17:37, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- If you are looking for another community member to help/take over, I'd be willing to help; perhaps others would too. —Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 21:54, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Mdaniels5757 I have added you to sbot & rotbot. best Steinsplitter (talk) 17:39, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Mdaniels5757: Thanks. You can ask on Phabricator to be added in the bot maintainer team. Yann (talk) 21:56, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
SteinsplitterBot didn't archive Commons:Undeletion requests/Current requests since 20:54, 19 December 2023. Yann (talk) 14:05, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- And Commons:List of administrators by recent activity wasn't updated since 13:01, 18 December 2023. Thanks, Yann (talk) 15:48, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
- Commons:List of administrators by recent activity has been updated.
- Template:PermissionTicket/Users/raw has also been updated, with edit counts and admin status indicators restored.
- Updating User:SteinsplitterBot/Previously deleted files failed due to a connection issue. I hope the next run at 0:00 UTC will succeed; if not, I’ll try to debug the connection issue.
- Processing {{Move cat}} commands on User:CommonsDelinker/commands should also be ported, but it hasn’t been scheduled yet (and even if it was, there are no such commands currently).
- The code archiving Commons:Undeletion requests/Current requests is quite different from the other ones. There is a README file on the server that states that the code is available at https://svn.toolserver.org/svnroot/bryan/bots/, but Toolserver has been shut down for years now… I have no idea whether and where that source code is available. 🙁 I fear I won’t be able to port it. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 12:55, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi and Mdaniels5757: Yes, Commons:Undeletion requests/Current requests is still not archived. This looks like a simple archiving task, so tweaking ArchiverBot should work, isn't? Yann (talk) 10:46, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Yann: User:ArchiverBot wouldn’t work:
- It archives sections that haven’t seen activity for a certain amount of time, not sections that have been resolved. There are sections on the page right now that haven’t seen any activity for weeks. These would be archived by ArchiveBot without the files being undeleted or the requests being declined (or the handled requests would remain on the page for weeks due to the high timeout).
- It considers the text beginning with a
==
-level heading and stopping before the next==
-level heading a topic. The {{Delh}} template, which is put before the heading, would therefore belong to the previous topic (request) as seen by the bot’s parser.
- Tacsipacsi (talk) 14:05, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Yann: User:ArchiverBot wouldn’t work:
Stats + Declined[edit]
Hi, Steinsplitter, can you take a look at Commons:File renaming/Stats and Commons:File renaming/Recently declined rename requests? They are standing still. Thanks in advance. PS: maybe a good idea if WMF takes over the bots, or other users? (see above) - Richardkiwi (talk) (talk) 16:12, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Richardkiwi: I don’t think WMF should take over the bots; running bots is the privilege and responsibility of the community. Now there are three maintainers of the bot in addition to Steinsplitter (including me), so hopefully things will work out. Now I migrated the bots maintaining the two pages you mentioned. The latter has already been updated, the former should be updated within 24 hours. (I changed the scheduling of the former: previously it ran at 06:40 AM each day; now it’s configured to run daily, but at no specific time, so that the server can better balance resource usage. The latter used to, and continues to, run every five minutes. Of course, only runs that actually change the page are visible in the page history.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:58, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi User:SteinsplitterBot/Rotatebot is stuck again. RZuo (talk) 20:05, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
- I see the in the logs: which apparently prevents the removal of the lock file, stopping all future (hourly) runs until the cleanup process (which is ran at 0:00, 7:00, 14:00 and 21:00 UTC) removes the lock files. So there are multiple problems here:
PHP Fatal error: Uncaught Mediawiki\Api\UsageException: Code: titleblacklist-forbidden-edit Message: The title "File:IMG-20200422-WA0003.jpg" has been banned from creation. It matches the following disallowed titles list entry: " File:IMG-\d{8}-WA\d{4}.jpg # WhatsApp, e.g. [[:File:IMG-20230409-WA0001.jpg]]" Result: {"error":{"code":"titleblacklist-forbidden-edit","info":"The title \"File:IMG-20200422-WA0003.jpg\" has been banned from creation. It matches the following disallowed titles list entry: \" File:IMG-\\d{8}-WA\\d{4}.jpg # WhatsApp, e.g. [[:File:IMG-20230409-WA0001.jpg]]\"","filekey":"1al6gvv4tz24.u35whx.3714013.jpg","sessionkey":"1al6gvv4tz24.u35whx.3714013.jpg","invalidparameter":"filename","*":"See https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/api.php for API usage. - Why does the API reject as upload with the comment The title "File:IMG-20200422-WA0003.jpg" has been banned from creation when the title File:IMG-20200422-WA0003.jpg exists, the bot only wants to upload a new version of it? I think reuploads shouldn’t be blocked: there’s no way to upload a new version of the file IMG-20200422-WA0003.jpg other than to upload it as IMG-20200422-WA0003.jpg.
- The bot shouldn’t crash on API errors. Just because it cannot rotate one file for whatever reason, it probably can rotate the next one, so it should go on.
- Even if there is an unexpected exception, the bot shouldn’t leave the lock file there. PHP has destructors, so putting the lock file removal to a destructor would guarantee that it’s run.
- Probably it shouldn’t use a lock file in the first place. The job scheduling system keeps track of whether the bot runs, so it should be (is? I don’t know) able to prevent the job from being started twice.
- And, actually, why is this file waiting to be renamed? It has a useless name, a useless description, useless content and no usage in WMF wikis. It should be deleted, not rotated. (However, it may be worth being kept as a test case until all the above bugs have been fixed.)
- —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:35, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
- I deleted all files by this user: out of scope and probable copyright violations. Yann (talk) 14:10, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- Many thanks for debugging and fixing. Merry Christmas! RZuo (talk) 17:19, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- Nothing has been fixed, only the test case was deleted. 🙁 So we’ll probably run into this again. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 09:03, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- I’ve done a bit of cleanup before getting hit by the lack of test case, which I’ve now submitted as a pull request: https://github.com/toollabs/Rotatebot/pull/1. Could Steinsplitter or anyone else with wright access to the repo access the pull request? (Except for the indentation cleaup, it’s basically things that have already been there on Toolforge, just missing from the repo.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 09:25, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi a test case is coming soon, in 6h or so. :) RZuo (talk) 18:03, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi: The Rotatebot function is stuck again since New Year's Eve. Anything you can do? --Rosenzweig τ 21:20, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi if that pull request was meant to also fix the titleblacklist problem, then it probably didnt work, because the bot is probably stuck on File:IMG-20230506-WA0015.jpg.
- i will rename the file in a few days. RZuo (talk) 12:33, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
- @RZuo: No, that pull request wasn’t meant to fix the titlebacklist problem. I planned to finish the fix for that during the holidays, but I didn’t manage to do that, and then I got busy with work and other IRL things. I finished and deployed it yesterday. Today I removed the lock functionality as the job scheduling system indeed prevents the job from being started twice. Unfortunately I managed to deploy the new scheduling configuration while the bot was running, so the on-wiki log will miss the nine already-processed images (and working through the backlog may take an hour more). I hope this won’t cause issues; the log file should contain all information the on-wiki log contains, although in a much less structured way. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 12:09, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- thx a lot for fixing the bot. RZuo (talk) 15:06, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Korrektur Drehung[edit]
Bot mistakenly claiming files have orientation 0[edit]
I added {{rotate|reset}} to a batch of files including File:ArcelorMittal Orbit - geograph.org.uk - 5865858.jpg. SteinSplitterBot declined to rotate the files because "reset EXIF Orientation reset requested but it was already 0 or 1. (0)". But on the file page the orientation is listed as "Rotated 90° CCW", and if I download it and look at it with exiftool its "Orientation" tag is set to "6". It looks like the Bot is not correctly reading the existing orientation. I can fix the orientation by hand, but there are a couple of hundred of them so it will take a while. --bjh21 (talk) 17:11, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

https://steinsplitter.toolforge.org/renaming/ gibt HTTP 500 zurück. Ich habe den Link deshalb aus Template:Media requiring renaming intro entfernt. Killarnee (talk) 21:11, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Killarnee: I’ve fixed it, thanks for the heads up! It looks like it has been broken since May 2022…
- @Steinsplitter, could you please merge https://github.com/Steinsplitter/File-renamers-queue/pull/4? (I’ve already deployed the changes to
index.php
, but I don’t have write access to your repo.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 12:33, 11 February 2024 (UTC)- Great, thanks. Removed the link because didn't thought it could be fixed. By the way a tool for mass processing file renaming requests would be great too. Killarnee (talk) 16:55, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- It was fortunately just an easy-to-fix database change (plus some cleanup). The mass processor tool would be quite a bit more difficult. (Also, I think that should be a gadget rather than a Toolforge tool to make editing in the name of the file mover easier.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 00:49, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Bot not updating Commons:Database reports/Getty Images[edit]
I noticed that SteinsplitterBot stopped updating the report at Commons:Database reports/Getty Images on 8 September 2023. It is possible for the bot to resume updating this report? It is likely that this is not a reasonable request given your edit notice, but it looks like some of the database reports are still being updated by the bot, so perhaps you can direct me to a current maintainer, if there is one. Looking at latest edits to the sbot respository, maybe I should be directing my request to Tacsipacsi? Thanks. —RP88 (talk) 10:13, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Da du diese Datei verschoben hast. Ich bin mir doch eigentlich sicher, dass das nicht ein SEV-Stecker ist (im Vergleich hier ein "echter" Stecker: File:SEV_1011_1998_Typ_11_L+N_Stecker.jpg). Das aus folgenden Gründen:
- Wirkt recht modern, also spätes 20.
Filzstift (talk) 11:45, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

Uncategorized data files[edit]
Hi Steinsplitter, I hope you are doing well since we haven't spoken each other for some time. I read above that you stopped developing bots, but I hope you might want to have a look at my question. I notice that your bot takes care of adding the Uncategorized template to files, thank you for that as that is very needed! I recently looked at the Data-namespace and I noticed many items there are not categorised. As categorisation seems not possible on the page itself, categories have been added to the talkpage. If the Uncategorized template is added to the talkpage of the data page it will be added to Category:Uncategorized data pages. Would it be possible for you to have your bot add the Uncategorized template to all talk pages of data pages without a category? Thanks! Romaine (talk) 15:56, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
Bot rotation shutdown 202403[edit]
Since 25 February 2024, SteinsplitterBot (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads · Abuse filter log) has stopped uploading rotated images due to technical problems. As of March 2024, no bot is rotating images.
You can use Commons:CropTool or other tools to manually rotate your images for the time being.--RZuo (talk) 18:08, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi! Two days ago, I've created a rotation request for the file above. There was written that the request will take up to 18 hours, but until now it's still undone. Could you take a look at my request and check if there's everything OK or maybe I've done some kind of mistake while creating request (I've never done that before). Thanks! Toolserver[edit]
@Tacsipacsi, RZuo, and Yann: Update: Unfortunately, the so called "Toolsforge" does not provide enough ressources (RAM, CPU, Storage and binarys) to run Rotatebot. Therefore i move the Rotatebot from WMF Tools Server to my own "Toolserver". So the bot should be up again :). --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:30, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
Italian discussion[edit]
Hi, can I ask you for your opinion on this discussion? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Bar_italiano#API_e_IP The two categories were moved without consensus, and furthermore (as explained in the discussion) for reasons that personally seem wrong to me. I would like to have an administrator's opinion regarding both the method (lack of consensus) and the motivations (a more subjective question, which deserves further opinions) Moxmarco (talk) 14:07, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, Generally COM:CFD is the due process for such discussions. Best --Steinsplitter (talk) 12:03, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
Äntligen maj: Wiki Loves Earth 2024![edit]
Hej,
(For information in English, see Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Sweden or other participating countries.)
Alicia Fagerving (WMSE) (talk) 10:58, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

Image rotating problems[edit]
Dear Steinsplitter,
it seems that SteinsplitterBot has a problem with rotating files (in its role as SteinsplitterBot/Rotatebot). The contributions list (please scroll down to 17:32, 24 May 2024) contains many entries with the message Bot: Could not get lock. Lock file already present. Exit.
And it seems the bot has not rotated any images since then. Could you have a look? Thank you very much!
Best regards, – Aristeas (talk) 08:35, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, Currently running the script directly in console by hand (not on WMF's new kubernetes thing) in order to reduce the backlog of approx 8k files. Best --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:41, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
