I saw your name on wiki commons and there at the same time my postludium on the organ of Feuchtwangen. I am a musician and my favorite instrument is the organ. Hi Graham87, well, I will now visit "Virtually Baroque". Do you know "crumhorn-labs" or "Hauptwerk" in German? They have sounds of historic european organs. A problem of real audio files is the copyright and the license of the music when you upload them. Do you have any ideas? Of course I can send you some of my own recordings. I am looking for some good pieces. Is that ok. ?

Hi Graham87, let me complete: I would also like to make records with my copy of a regal from about 1600 ( original in the "Germanische Nationalmuseum Nürnberg" ) I only hope to get a "kalkant" to handle the two bellows. You can see a picture of it on the german wiki under "Regal (Musikinstrument)". I played it often in concert and it is an "earcatcher" with it´s special sound. Good night Uli

Hi Graham, after some busy days of renovating our bathroom I´m back here again and I have placed five minutes ago KV 618 "Ave verum" on my sandbox. The choir and the orchestra come from Senftenberg (about 60km from Dresden) in Eastern Germany. They made a trip to the Romantic Road with Rothenburg and Dinkelsbuehl and performed here also the Mass G-Dur by Schubert. I´ve first chosen the "Ave verum" because of the fact that this big church (St-George´s Minster) in Dinkelsbuehl produces a lot of "Nachhall" (english?) So the homophone structure of this piece helps to get an adequate impression of the music. And I think this ensemble does a good job! Perhaps I can choose a Schubert part if not too bad with this enormous "Hall".

it is correct: the consonants are quite "weak". But I think that must be the reverberation too. I had some conversation with them and they did pronounce quite clear. Of course I got the permission of Uli Stein, the conductor (you are right: that´s the "old" problem!) and yesterday I could send a CD to Senftenberg as a souvenir. And the coughing is because it was the normal sunday service and not a concert performance. Well I will make such live recording time after time. Perhaps I can find a better place for the Handy recorder. But as the organist I must be near to the console. The regal recording is one of my next plans - let´s see when I find time to realize. Now is the time of gardening and our wheather is perfect with sunshine and mild temperatures. I guess at he moment which composer had a work with the name of Perth. Of course you know what I mean. "........ young ladies of Perth" ???

it is the opera "The fair maid of Perth" after a novel by Sir Walter Scott composed by George Bizet. I knew the title, but never have heard a piece of this opus. But of course it must be Perth in Scotland as it plays in the 14th century. It seems to exist a second title "St. Valentine´s day" Perhaps I get a file to get an impression of the music.

Hi Graham,
I have placed another liverecording on my sandbox: "El Noi de la Mare". It is a catalan song and I have arranged it myself. I inform you because the sound of the middle part is very similar the sound of my regal. I think the stop on the big organ was a crumhorn. Well - in the next weeks I hope to get enough time to put the parts of the regal together and find a calcant. The main parts are: the keyboard ( just ~ four octaves) with the tiny pipes and the windchest, the two bellows and two weights from lead to give the right wind pressure. I have a sort of big boardcase for tranport and often I made trips to concerts with the "fastest organ of southern Germany" as I said.

many thanks for your quick answer. Well, for me as a German who is born after this Nazi period it was a sort of shock to see this midi-file. In Germany this melody is forbidden and censored and that´s ok and no one should change this law. Only for educational purposes it can be used. And that is the point to understand that wiki has such files. I had a brilliant history teacher and he informed us about all the cruelty of the Hitler regime and so my reaction was very emotional and it must be so. I can understand that a broad spectrum of information is necessary to show any aspect of those dictatorships.

Hi Graham, not yet the regal, but in the meantime on my sandbox my spinet from 1983, out of a kit from Burton Harpsichords. It is not tuned or regulated, but the sound is not bad I think and I played an improvisation in the style of the sons of J. S. Bach as we say "Vorklassik" between Baroque and Classic.

Hi, I heard the sound of the instruments you mentioned and I was especially fascinated by the sound of the Lautenwerck. Some years ago a played a Virginal of the german cembalo maker Sassmann ( I think it is www.sassmann.de ). They build those items up to now, but they don´t have any sound examples on their site. This sound was very similar and quite "sonor" as we say, that means full of resonance but not loud. I played it on a visit of the Frankfurt Music fair and my brother was not very successfull when he told me to proceed to the other instruments. I played and came back and played again. It had/has only one 8' stop and nothing else and such a richness of the sound. That´s all for today - we have early evening and it is mild ith about 20° Celsius. Greetings Uli

Hi, today I have placed a sonata of D. Scarlatti on the sandbox and I have a question too: I don't understand the system of the categories and cannot place a media-file in a category. Perhaps you could give me an example, please.
Now the spinet is tuned and not quite bad in regulation. Yesterday I read a sentence of a harpsichordmaker: the difference to disaster is about half a millimeter. And he refers to the position of the jack in the jackrail and such very difficile things. As I plan now to renovate my other instruments I have a lot of work, but it is also a lot of fun! Well: a clavichord and a little organ are waiting - and not to forget the regal!!! Of course it depends on the Kalkant.

Wow re new organ ... been a while since I've heard a big Romantic organ like that; the last time I was on an organ fix on Youtube, I was listening to baroque music, but this grand Romantic music is also very beautiful. My mother and I are planning a Northern European trip for next year, including some of Germany; unfortunately at the momen the furthest south we'll probably be able to go is Frankfurt, not Bavaria. here comes the REGAL !
Hi Graham,
today I found an old walkman with cassette tape and now I can easily make digital recording with the "grandpa" walkman and the "baby" Zoom H2 ( line in- line out ). And I found a cassette of our tour in Hungary from 1989. And a liverecording with a solo of me playing this regal I mentioned so often. But is is just the first regal recording I hear myself. Enjoy it - the sound is very strident as you said. It is also a little bit delicate to play as the keys are very short and tiny. The sound comes immediately. Mind your fingers - but all historical instruments have their special character. Not to forget: of course the soundfile is on my sandbox. Good night Uli

I like this sound too, like a ensemble of crumhorns. And it is fun to play. Of course you heard the blowing of the bellows and just in the middle a slight "down" of the wind pressure as one of the two bellows must be filled again. At the beginning the "Kalkant" often tried to fill the two bellows simultaneously - but then there is no sound at all. Hi, I´ve found another regal piece on the old cassette and you can hear it also on my sandbox. A special effect are the two dampers my brother and I constructed: two wooden parts with felt, they close the "schalloeffnungen" ( don´t know the word) and about in the middle of this piece I remove them and the sound comes out very clear and bright. greetings Uli

I choosed out the theme of KV 331/first movement, composed in Paris. I like this melody followed by variations that would cause a breakdown of half of this instrument or the fingers of the player. Hi Graham,
the sound of the instrument placed in our dining room is very soft and small. And if there is any conversation, the clavichord sound nearly disappears. That means if I want to play in the middle of the night it is no problem for people who are sleeping. The closed door is enough protection.
Modern man´s ears are often not able to hear those intimate sounds as our ancestors did. We have a lot of technical sounds which are dominating our sound scenery. But it is good to know that some people appreciate also the softer sounds. Well I like both: playing organ is using both sides. I like to play with power, but in the next minute with one single delicate stop. What is interesting for me is the nearly unlimited variety.

a romantic Larghetto for organ
Hi, yesterday I found this Larghetto (now on my sandbox) from op. 53 by Moritz Brosig, a german composer of the 19th century. It sounds a bit like Mendelssohn. I´m sorry, but it occurs at this time only as a Finale-file, but I want to make a recording with the big organ in Dinkelsbuehl where I have the kind of sound I can hear in my brain already. I know this audiofile is a synthetic sound, but the quality behind is important. What do you mean? Is it a little piece of music worth to be performed? Or forget it? Hi Graham,
today I´ve placed my own version of the Larghetto by Brosig on my sandbox. I recorded it yesterday. I played it the first time and therefore it is not quite perfect, but sounds better than the electronic one. And a second organ piece is there: Cantilène religieuse by Theodore Dubois. I like it and perhaps I play and record it tomorrow again, but on the big organ in Dinkelsbuehl with a big variety of stops. Just enjoy it

I found the flute siciliano and it is amazing for me because it has not the typical rhythm and it has a quite different character. Now I am sorry at the moment: could you please inform me what to do? Of course I will help you anyway. It is my english that makes the problem I fear. Please explain it for me. By the way: I heard that BWV 596 in a brillant piano recital by Arcadi Volodos last week as one of his 4 "Zugaben". I can understand your resentiments against such MIDI-files. They seem to come out of stoneage. I make a proposal that is easier I hope: as I often have problem with transferring files and similar actions: could you do that and write your description in English? Perhaps with a note, that this description will be translated ( by me !! ) shortly after - and then it might be perfect again. Is this practicable?? I hope so. By the way I am quite fine, but it seems as I would get a a cold as our weather is like a merry-go-round this year. And so I am sneezing all the time to the sound of beautiful Sicilianas. Well, could be worse. By the way: today I played a very nice ogan piece by Fernand de la Tombelle, his "Marche pontificale" on the big Rieger in Dinkelsbuehl. Vivaldi/Bach
Hi Graham,
nice to have some news from Perth and also to hear something in those virtual aereas. I can understand your 'Lamento' "... editing sound files makes one go mad !" That is exactly the feeling you often get and I have made this job and got somehow feeling burnt out. You mentioned the slight difference with E and D and I say I prefer the D. Bach was a practising musician and did not hesitate to adapt pieces from other composers and make them as perfect as he could. And he did with no problem! I remember that the BWV 596 autograph by Bach doesn't even use the octave d³ to d² at the beginning of the solo. And that´s only a practical reason because most of the organs of his time had a range until c³ and no d³ at all. As I whistled this funny solo version I place it only to my sandbox. It is not very artificial but you will easy get the difference. ;-)) The orchestra plays very nice. My best greetings to you and thank you for this "mad and necessary job" in music.

greetings to you in Perth and a look to christchurch town hall after last earthquake
Hi Graham, first I hope you are quite well and my state of health is not very bad, could be a little bit better. But it is important to say ok. and that gives me a positive feeling. Last year I had a connexion to christchurch in NZ as I found out they had a Rieger organ in the town hall and it was built 1997 = the same year as the instrument I have played regularly in St. George's Minster in Dinkelsbuehl, Bavaria. The first quake last year did not cause any damage, but now it seems to be more problems- But since February they are not allowed to go in the building. Some weeks ago a private party tried to enter a church and three men were killed trying to keep out some organ parts. And so they have to wait until the experts for construction or better damage of buildings allow to go in. And now to your activities: what are your latest projects?

I'm not really supposed to undo checkuser blocks but I've done so in this situation because the IP range is used by millions of people across the US. I assume that this vandal, or relatives/friends of his, drive through NY metro area to vandalize pages in retaliation. Important message for file movers
A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning.
